Crime Alert - Westside Village Civic Association

September 14, 2007

Unfortunately, we’ve seen an increase in home burglaries on
the Westside and in Westside Village. Thieves have not
spared even some of the most exclusive neighborhoods. In
Westside Village, we’ve seen home burglaries on Malcolm,
Ellenda, Kelton, Military, Kingsland and Tabor and those
are the ones that we’ve been notified of. The suspects in
the Malcolm burglary had the thieves knocking on doors to
see who’s NOT home and then breaking in. A silver Toyota
Camry with paper plates and very dark tinted windows was
seen around the time of the burglary. This car was also
spotted on another block where strangers were knocking on
doors. In addition, a week later the Toyota was seen again
in WV speeding away with a bright red Dodge Charger.

In addition, we’ve been informed of some very suspicious
behavior. In one case, a woman knocked on a door at
10:30pm crying that she was from two blocks over and it was
an emergency and she needed to be let in. The first
neighbor declined, but the next neighbor did not. She
asked them to call her husband, but when the man on the
other line picked up, he said he didn’t know the woman.
The woman was asked to leave immediately and nothing
further happened. Then on a different night, same block a
similar occurrence happened at 2:00am. Thieves in one of
the home burglaries used this tactic. Please don’t let
strangers in your home. If they are crying that it’s an
emergency, offer to call 911 for them, but DO NOT let them
in.

Police recommend if you see suspicious behavior, please
write down a description of the individuals and cars
involved and then call 1-877-ASK-LAPD. If you see a
burglary in progress, please call 911 with as much
information as you can get and do not approach the
suspects. For more information on the local LAPD division
responsible for Westside Village, please go to
pacificbeat.net.

Here are some helpful hints to make your house less
appealing to thieves.

•Always lock your doors and windows. Many burglaries occur
through an unlocked door or window.

•Never let mail or newspapers build up. This is a surefire
way to tell burglars that you’re not home.

•Lock your cars and don’t leave any personal belongings
(e.g. garage door openers, cell phones, iPods, etc.) in the
car.

•Get organized with your neighbors and keep an eye out for
each other.

The recent increase in crime is exactly why the
Neighborhood Watch and Block Captain program is so
important. We would very much like to get back on track
with our block captains and get Neighborhood Watch meetings
in Westside Village. If you are interested, please email
us at westsidevillageboard@yahoo.com.
